Tool Helps Determine Whether Individual Mandate Payment is Owed

The "individual mandate" provision under Health Care Reform requires every individual to have minimum essential health coverage for each month, qualify for an exemption, or make a payment when filing his or her federal income tax return. To help individuals determine if they qualify for an exemption or if they must make a payment, the IRS has released an interactive health coverage exemption tool.

Required Information
Individuals will need the following information in order to utilize the tool:

  • Filing status;
  • Whether they can claim any dependents;
  • Adjusted gross income (or the type and amount of income received during the year) for the tax year; and
  • The adjusted gross income (or the type and amount of income received during the year) of their dependents that are required to file a tax return.

The estimated completion time for the tool is 15 minutes.
